Tacoma Sister Cities Expands Partnership in South Africa

Welcoming the Garden Route District Municipality

Tacoma has officially expanded its international partnerships in South Africa with the establishment of a new Sister City relationship with the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM). Approved unanimously by the Tacoma City Council, this milestone builds upon Tacoma’s long-standing relationship with George, South Africa—transforming one connection into a dynamic regional partnership spanning seven communities.

A Regional Partnership Rooted in History

“When new things are planted, you give honor to the roots.”

For nearly three decades, Tacoma has shared a meaningful connection with George, South Africa. This new partnership does not replace that relationship—it strengthens and expands it. By connecting with the broader Garden Route District, Tacoma now engages with a diverse and vibrant region along one of the most breathtaking coastlines in the world.

Meet the Garden Route Communities

The Garden Route District Municipality includes seven unique and culturally rich communities:

  • George – Tacoma’s original sister city and enduring partner

  • Mossel Bay – A thriving port city full of coastal energy and culture

  • Oudtshoorn – The world-renowned Ostrich Capital

  • Plettenberg Bay – A place of extraordinary natural beauty

  • Knysna – Known for its iconic lagoon and ancient forests

  • Hessequa – A pristine coastline where whales return each year

  • Kannaland – Klein Karoo country, rich in heritage and tradition

This expansion reflects years of vision, collaboration, and dedication from leaders and community members in both Tacoma and South Africa. It also positions Tacoma at the forefront of global engagement efforts aligned with Sister Cities International’s mission to expand U.S.–Africa partnerships.
